What We Do

Comprehensive, dignified, community-driven health interventions providing essential primary healthcare, maternal survival, and clean water across Afghanistan.

Pillar 1

Primary Health Care & Static Health Centers (SHCs)

OPHA operates and supports community-level Sub-Health Centers (SHCs) and Comprehensive Health Centers (CHCs) in rural and isolated districts of Afghanistan. Our facilities deliver outpatient consultations, minor emergency surgeries, wound care, chronic disease management, and pharmaceutical dispensing.

  • Daily medical consultations by licensed medical doctors and clinical nurses
  • Free essential medications adhering to the Afghan Essential Package of Hospital Services (EPHS/BPHS)
  • Cold-chain vaccine preservation for infant and childhood immunizations
  • Laboratory screening and diagnostic point-of-care testing

Pillar 2

Mobile Health & Nutrition Teams (MHNTs)

Millions of Afghans reside in remote mountainous valleys cut off from static health facilities. OPHA's Mobile Health & Nutrition Teams deploy in rugged all-terrain vehicles and foot patrols to bring healthcare directly to nomadic (Kuchi) families, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and underserved villages.

  • Integrated clinical teams: Medical Doctor, Midwife, Nutrition Counselor, and Vaccinator
  • Mobile pharmacy carrying life-saving antibiotics, IV fluids, and pediatric medicines
  • Rapid diagnosis of infectious outbreaks (measles, acute watery diarrhea, pneumonia)
  • Emergency ambulance evacuation links to provincial hospitals

Pillar 3

Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (MNCH)

Afghanistan faces some of the world's most severe maternal and infant mortality rates. OPHA prioritizes female reproductive healthcare by staffing certified midwives across all field units.

  • Antenatal care (ANC) and high-risk pregnancy screening
  • Clean, safe delivery kits and 24/7 skilled birth attendance
  • Postnatal care (PNC), newborn resuscitation, and thermal care
  • Iron-folic acid supplementation and tetanus toxoid immunizations for expecting mothers

Pillar 4

Nutrition & Therapeutic Feeding (SAM/MAM)

Malnutrition remains an acute threat to Afghan children under 5 and nursing mothers. OPHA operates Outpatient Therapeutic Program (OTP) sites and Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programs (TSFP).

  • MUAC screening and biometric nutritional surveillance
  • Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) and supplementary rations (RUSF)
  • Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) counseling for rural mothers
  • Treatment of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) with medical complications

Pillar 4

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Preventing illness begins with safe water. OPHA couples clinical healthcare with durable water infrastructure, constructing deep solar-powered borewells, installing gravity-fed water networks in clinics, and teaching community hygiene practices.

  • Solar-powered water supply schemes in health centers and schools
  • Distribution of emergency water purification tablets and family hygiene kits
  • Gender-segregated, disability-accessible sanitation facilities
  • Community hygiene promotion to eradicate waterborne cholera and diarrhea
